What would texting be like without emojis, let alone the popular poop emoji? Because honestly, there's nothing better than a smiling pile of poop. But there was a time when the emoji's future in the U.S. was in jeopardy and now we know all dirty details thanks to this oral history of the poop emoji

FYI: the emoji, Japanese for “image character,” started back in 1999 in Japan but didn't come Stateside until 2007 when Google got involved to bring emoji to Gmail. In the process, there was basically a long back-and-forth battle over the scatalogical emoji— which was a favorite in Japan—because execs felt people would be offended by it.

Fortunately, the idea not having the poop emoji was poo-pooed and now all us Americans are better for it.
