The doctor who contracted the Ebola virus while treating patients in Sierra Leone has died, health officials say.

According to the Associated Press, Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. announced this morning that Dr. Martin Salia passed away. The 44-year-old Maryland resident was working with Ebola patients at the Kissy United Methodist Hospital in his native Sierra Leone when he tested positive for the disease a week ago.

Salia arrived at Nebraska Medical Center's biocontainment unit for treatment on Saturday. ABC News reports that upon arrival, Salia was already suffering from advanced symptoms including respiratory and kidney failure.

Salia's death makes him the second person to succumb to the disease in the United States after Thomas Eric Duncan died last month.
