We're beyond the point of every movie star going to television. Hell, we're even beyond the point of talking about every movie star going to television. So it should come as no surprise that Scarlett Johansson will be the next one to star in a TV show.
EW has confirmed ScarJo will star in and executive produce Custom of the Country, based on a 1913 novel of the same name. Backed by Sony, the show hasn't been picked up yet. But the goal is to get the eight-episode run picked up by a cable network, maybe even a premium one.
In case you're not familiar with the century-old novel by Edith Wharton, here's the synopsis from Amazon:
"Wharton’s The Custom of the Country is a scathing novel of ambition featuring one of the most ruthless heroines in literature. Undine Spragg (ScarJo) is as unscrupulous as she is magnetically beautiful. Her rise to the top of New York’s high society from the nouveau riche provides a provocative commentary on the upwardly mobile and the aspirations that eventually cause their ruin. One of Wharton’s most acclaimed works, The Custom of the Country is a stunning indictment of materialism and misplaced values that is as powerful today for its astute observations about greed and power as when it was written nearly a century ago."
We know Johansson has the magnetically beautiful thing down, and we sure as shit can't argue against greed and power being prevalent today. Considering the name attached, you can expect this to be picked up to air.
