NYPD officers fatally shot a man in Queens this afternoon after he charged at them with a hatchet, authorities say. In addition, an innocent bystander was injured after being struck by a stray bullet.
The New York Daily News reports that the man approached four officers in the Jamaica section of Queens today, menacing them with the hatchet. The blade struck two officers: one in the arm, the other in the head. Following the attack, which NYPD spokeswoman Kim Royster called "completely unprovoked," the officers opened fire, killing the unidentified aggressor.
According to the Daily News, a 29-year-old woman was struck in the back by a bullet during the melee, and she was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in what the Daily News described as "grave" condition. The officer who suffered a wound to the head was taken to the same hospital.
The Daily News adds that an investigation into the incident continues.
