Ben Affleck knows a good chunk of the Internet collectively groaned when he was announced to play Bruce Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And he also knows why. Daredevil, his first foray into the comic book world, sucked. It really sucked. So he wants to clarify that Batman v Superman won't suck like Daredevil.
In an interview with NPR Affleck addressed the 2003 film the world still firmly and correctly believes was a brick.
"Look, if I thought we were remaking Daredevil I'd be out there picketing myself ... and that goes for other movies as well that I haven't been happy with. ... [Batman v Superman] was written by Chris Terrio, who wrote Argo, who's not a comic guy. And it's directed by Zack Snyder, who's a incredibly magical sort of visual stylist who's steeped in the comic world. And you have this sandwich of talents. I felt very confident about it. ... I thought it would be nice to make one of these movies, really, really good."
It's a solid strategy: throw us a bone and admit your last superhero effort sucked, and then distance yourself and the next flick from it as much as possible. And you know what? We believe him. Batman v Superman probably won't be as painful as Daredevil. It might even be good, and here's a few reasons why:
- In case you've forgotten, Affleck has been running shit since The Town in 2010.
- 2003 Colin Farrell will be nowhere near this movie. We repeat: there will be absolutely no 2003 Colin Farrell.
- Affleck looks like a bawse in-costume. That chin game is unfuckwitable.
- Snyder is due for a rebound. Man of Steel was a letdown, and Sucker Punch was even worse than Daredevil. But this is the same dude who brought us Watchmen and 300. Don't forget that.
Now we've just got to wait until 2016 to see if Affleck and us won't have to eat our words.
