"You didn't turn your camera off, did you?" That's what one Austin police officer said to his colleague after he made a rape joke. No outrage. No, "Hey, that's not cool, man." Just pure self-preservation.
Oh, and the answer to his question was no. The dashcam was totally on.
Yesterday the video above leaked, capturing two officers shooting the shit outlining their delusions and joking about rape. At first the officers talk about how "shit would get real for the bad guys" if they teamed up together. Then, upon seeing an attractive woman—according to the YouTube uploader—one officer makes a weird rape whistle comment before the following exchange:
Officer 1: Look at that girl over there.
Officer 2: (blows whistle) Go ahead and call the cops. They can't unrape you. (laughter)
Officer 1: You didn't turn your camera off, did you?
Officer 2: They can't unrape you.
The Austin police department has since confirmed the authenticity of the video and says it's launching an internal investigation. What it hasn't done, however, is name the two officers involved.
So we'll do it instead: Exhibit A and Exhibit B of why some women are afraid to go to the police after being raped.
