In due time, the NYPD intends to add body cameras to police uniforms to record encounters.

According to the New York Daily News, New York City Public Advocate Letitia James cited the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown as inspiration for her proposal to provide police with the devices. "We’ve got a tool at our disposal, which is used in other jurisdictions, that in fact can improve police-community relations," she told the Daily News. "The question is why it isn’t implemented in New York City."

The Daily News added that NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton confirmed a plan to introduce body cams to officers. "That’s where we’re going in the NYPD," Bratton told MSNBC last week. "We're working very closely with the LAPD, who’s about a year ahead of us in putting cameras in place."

Though New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio supports the addition of cameras, the Daily News notes that he said the technology is "not something that has been perfected" yet.
