Evening Storms Leave at Least Five Dead in New York, Maryland

Several homes were destroyed.

Storms tore through the Northeast last night, killing at least five people and rendering several thousands more powerless. 

USA Today reports that four of the five deaths occurred in Smithfield, N.Y., where powerful winds destroyed at least four homes and damaged several more. USA Today adds that, as of this morning, upwards of 70,000 people in New York remain without power.

A thunderstorm in Maryland caused a tree to fall on River Valley Ranch campers, killing a child and injuring six more as they sought shelter. 

According to USA Today, over 300,000 people in Pennsylvania lost power at the height of the storm, and 135,000 are still without power this morning.
