The appearance of a video which shows a California Highway Patrol officer beating a woman on the side of a Los Angeles road has triggered an investigation by the agency.

According to the Associated Press, CHP brass say the officer was trying to restrain the woman, who was in the process of endangering herself:

None

While CHP Assistant Chief Chris O'Quinn said the video only shows "a small part of what transpired," David Diaz, the motorist who captured the incident on camera, told the Associated Press that the officer "agitated the situation more than helped it."

The video went viral after Diaz forwarded it to the media earlier in the week. O'Quinn told the Associated Press that the woman did not sustain any injuries, but is undergoing psychiatric evaluation. The unnamed officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is carried out.
