Three Rikers Island guards have been charged with attempted assault for beating a inmate until he lost consciousness a day after Hurricane Sandy

According to the Daily Intelligencer, authorities say that 27-year-old Gabino Genao was "verbally abusing" one of the three officers, which prompted them to handcuff his hands behind his back and attack him in a stairwell. When he ducked one of their punches, they grew even more violent, beating him with their fists and batons while kicking him on the ground.

The beating left Genao with several injuries, while the officers tried to hide the details of the assault. The Daily Intelligencer mentions that the New York City Department of Investigations found inconsistencies between the assault and Genao's injuries, and that their incident reports neglected to mention the use of batons.

If convicted, all three could face a maximum of 15 years behind bars.
