Officials in Jersey City, N.J. say a memorial created for the man who shot and killed a police officer over the weekend has been done away with.

According to the Associated Press, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says the mural honoring Lawrence Campbell has been removed. The Associated Press adds that the memorial, featured on a brick wall in the city, included "candles, balloons, empty liquor bottles" in addition to messages from friends and family.

Campbell, 27, shot and killed Officer Melvin Santiago, 23, on Sunday morning as he responded to a call about a robbery at a Walgreens. Additional police officers responding to the robbery returned fire, killing Campbell.

Campbell's widow, Angelique, told News 12 New Jersey that her husband should've killed more police officers if they intended to kill him. Fulop told CBS New York that both her remarks and the memorialwere "disgusting" and "ignorant."
