This is so sad. According to CNN, legendary actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, and civil rights activist, Ruby Dee, passed away peacefully in her New Rochelle, New York home today. She was 91. The news was confirmed via her representative, Michael Livingston.
Dee was one of the most important figures of the civil rights movement: Both her and her husband, Ossie Davis, were fixtures during the time, and Dee's accomplishments in the entertainment industry were unparalleled—she's been awarded a Grammy, Emmy, Obie, Drama Desk, and Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as been nominated for an Academy Award. She was also close friends with both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
Dee reportedly passed away of natural causes.
