Two gambling rings that have reportedly fielded millions of dollars worth of bets on the World Cup have been raided in the Chinese city of Macau, authorities say.
BBC News reports that 26 people were arrested during two raids on a hotel that took place yesterday and Thursday:
In the first sweep, they discovered a gambling syndicate that had been operating out of three rooms in the hotel. Officers found betting slips, details of gambling accounts and a large amount of cash.
According to BBC News, the rings had been taking bets by telephone and via the Internet from all over the globe. Police reportedly found evidence revealing a single bet of over $5 million.
Though BBC News notes that gambling is permitted in Macau, it's largely illegal in China, and there has been a recent crackdown due to gang involvement in the practice.
