NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio to Fight for Citywide Rent Freeze

Salvation.

Still possibly seeking atonement for forkgate, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is nudging the city's Rent Guidelines Board to institute its first-ever rent freeze.

The New York Post reports that the mayor made the announcement at a Queens bill-signing ceremony, noting that the board had allowed landlords to increase rents almost recklessly under the Bloomberg administration. Now is the time to right those wrongs, de Blasio declared.

"I’m encouraging all the members of the Rent Guidelines Board to vote for a freeze," he said at today's engagement. "We need a course correction."

According to the Post, de Blasio specifically asked for a zero percent increase for renewals after a year. The board plans to meet tonight, and, as the Post mentions, has never voted for increases less than two percent for one-year renewals and four percent for two-year renewals.
