The MTA's "Green Fee" Is Working Out Nicely for Them

They knew exactly what they were doing.

Last March, the MTA decided to add a $1 surcharge for the purchase of new MetroCards, because New York City is always trying to break your pockets. Their plan has worked out as expected, as the little inconvenience fee has driven sales down by an impressive 71 percent.

According to Gothamist, the agency produced 25 million new MetroCards between last March and this past April, i.e. 65 million less than the same duration a year prior. More important, that extra dollar has made the MTA $24 million. As the Daily Intelligencer jokes, it's these hard-headed commuters—and the people who always lose things—who keep the agency's pockets fat.
