Ideas aren't worth more than reality. And for Microsoft, having the ideas first should have gave them a major head start, especially the ones from this video circa 1999.
It shows Microsoft's idea for a "smart home" that adjusts to a person's liking, and connects a family with the ease of use that smartphones give us today. These are all things that Apple, Google, and other startups have been working on, and are making happen at a faster pace than Microsoft.
