While his role was only designed to last one season, Matthew McConaughey told Deadline that he might have interest in bringing Rust Cohle back for another season of True Detective.

He said that “[one season] was always how I saw it. One season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle and end, goodbye, look forward to watching it. If HBO had wanted an option on me for a Season 2 or 3, I wouldn’t have done it.”

However, he then went on to add that “I liked True Detective, the whole series and the experience of making it, so much that I’d be open to doing another one now.”

As fun as that would be, it does not seem like that is going to happen anytime soon. The show has already committed to an entirely new plot arc next season, with three brand new leads (actors TBA, plot details hazy) instead of last season’s two.

We’ll get to relive our one season with Rust over and again, though, as Emmy voting ramps up and McConaughey’s performance inevitably generates a ton of buzz.
