A Virginia man who was vacationing in North Carolina was killed this week after being buried alive by the sand tunnel he was digging.

The Virginia-Pilot reports that David Frasier, 49, was in the process of constructing a tunnel to join two six-foot-deep holes on a beach in Salvo, N.C. Monday afternoon. Emergency responders arrived just before 3 p.m. to find his family removing him from the sand. According to National Park Service spokeswoman Cyndy Holda, the Fredericksburg, Va. native's family said had been buried for 10 to 15 minutes. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Noting that this type of freak accident is "rare," Holda told the Virginia-Pilot that it had been at least a decade since someone had met a similar fate. "It's probably too deep to be safe if you are using a shovel," she explained.
