Despite somewhat disappointing box office returns in the U.S., 2013’s Pacific Rim has gained a rabid fanbase begging for more. And while it may never see the light of day, director Guillermo del Toro says he and writer Zak Penn are working on a sequel screenplay right now. In an interview with Buzzfeed, del Toro said:
None
That's all well and good, but here is the catch: the director told the site, “I don’t have the money, but I’m proceeding like it is happening."
The first Pacific Rim was a huge gamble, which, honestly, didn’t pay off in the U.S. It did, however, make some serious money overseas, earning a total of $411 million at the worldwide box office. On a $190 million budget, that’s not terrible, but it’s also not enough to guarantee a sequel.
Still, as hard as it is to believe, the movie has made more money worldwide than this year’s Godzilla so far, and that film is already getting a sequel. Maybe del Toro’s script will be enough to push Pacific Rim 2 into production.
