Officials in San Francisco approved a $76 plan to build a huge steel net to prevent suicides at the Golden Gate Bridge

The Associated Press reports that the district board for the bridge voted unanimously yesterday to erect the barrier. According to the Associated Press, $20 million will come from toll revenue, another $49 million will be funded by federal money, and the remaining $7 million will come from the state of California.

"The tragedy of today is that we can't go back in time, we can't save ... the people who jumped off the bridge," Janet Riley, a board member, said during the ceremony. "But the good thing, with this vote today, we can vote in their memory."

Over 1,400 people have reportedly jumped to their deaths since the bridge opened in 1937.
