A man was killed yesterday morning when a flying manhole cover smashed through the window of a tractor-trailer on a Bronx highway, striking the driver in the head.

The New York Post reports that 35-year-old Jose Duran of Springfield, Mass. was on the Cross Bronx Expressway when the freak accident happened around 5:25 a.m. Duran's vehicle hit another tractor-trailer in the next lane, though the driver was not injured.

The Post adds that Duran was pronounced dead after being rushed to Lincoln Hospital with massive head trauma.

Though it remains unclear what, exactly, launched the manhole cover into the air, police believe it was another passing vehicle.
