In case you were not aware, today is officially Robocop Day in Detroit. To commemorate the occasion (and to coincide with the DVD release of the Robocop remake), a Kickstarter-funded bronze statue of Robocop himself will be unveiled outside Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.

There will be festivities all day long, to be punctuated by Robocop throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at tonight’s Detroit Tigers game.

According to MLive.com, these events all came about due in part to one enterprising Twitter user. This person wasn’t even located in Detroit, or even Michigan; a Massachusetts resident, the user tweeted at Detroit mayor Dave Bing  and said “Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & Robocop would kick Rocky's butt. He's a GREAT ambassador for Detroit.”

Bing replied, “there are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion.” That denial, though, was all the impetus the internet needed to spring into action. A Kickstarter campaign raised $67,436, and now this dream has become a reality.

Now the only question that remains is: will Axel Foley be getting one next?
