An innocent man spent 23 years behind bars for murder, and now his family is suing the New York City for $15 million.

In 1990, David Ranta was convicted for the murder of a Rabbi in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The 59-year-old was released last March after it was revealed that the investigation was mishandled by the lead detective.

Ranta, who initially filed a $150 million suit against the city, was given $6.4 million worth of settlement money in February. But considering the errors made by the city, specifically the NYPD and detectives Louis Scarcella and Stephen Chmil, Ranta's family is taking the city to task for another $15 million:

Gothamist adds that Ranta's attorney, Peter C. Dee, says he intends to sue the state of New York as well. This news comes just days after Jonathan Fleming, who was imprisoned for 25 years for a murder he did not commit, announced plans to sue the city for $162 million.
