While speculation around the time the PS4 launched last November said otherwise, Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki has reportedly revealed From Software's new next-gen exclusive Bloodborne was never intended to be a sequel to Demon's Souls. Instead, Bloodborne's gothic horror aesthetic and faster-paced, panicked play style was simply Miyazaki taking the tenets of the Souls games in a new direction.

In a recent interview with 4Gamer (with a translation appearing on NeoGAF), Miyazaki evidently was approached by Sony Computer Entertainment to work on something new for the new hardware after the launch of Dark Souls.

"It was still before the initial PS4 announcement, but the idea of working on new hardware was very appealing to us, so we eagerly agreed," Miyazaki said in the interview. Those of us actually working on the game never even considered making [Bloodborne] Demon’s Souls 2. Even looking at it objectively, it does seem like a very SCE-like decision."

The director also revealed that in heading up Bloodborne, he felt that development on Dark Souls II was a good opportunity for someone else at From to get their moment in the sun.

"I had already received plenty of chances, and if someone else in the company could take that same chance and make good on it, then From Software could grow as an organization," Miyazaki said. "I also wanted to see what kind of possibilities awaited when the base concept of Dark Souls was unshackled from myself."

While Bloodborne's E3 demo was stripped down of much of its base parts – likely for the sake of brevity in a relatively brief demonstration at a busy trade show – the game apparently, and unsurprisingly, hews very closely to the spirit of a Souls game, Miyazaki said.

While a translation appearing on NeoGAF could be cause for some to take this news with a grain of salt, there doesn't seem to be anything amiss in what Miyazaki is saying. Check out the full interview transcription via the link below, and check back here for more news on Bloodborne as it develops.
