A 6-year-old boy was killed and 7-year-old girl was injured yesterday after being stabbed inside of a Brooklyn elevator, authorities say.
The New York Times reports that Prince Joshua Avitto and friend Mikayla Capers were attacked and stabbed several times by a man at East New York's Boulevard Houses around 6 p.m. Avitto was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center; Capers was in critical condition there before being moved to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
According to the Times, Deputy Police Chief Patrick Conry said the suspect, described as a "heavyset" man in his 20s, fled the scene. No arrests have been made, but a knife was found at the scene.
Sophia Diaz, who lived near Avitto—who was known as "P.J."—said he would've turned seven this month. "His birthday is June 17. He didn’t even make it to seven years old," she told the Times. "How could a grown man who was as big as they say he is find it in his heart to do that to them? When P.J. is only 40, 50 pounds?"
UPDATE: The Sporting News reports that Avitto was the cousin of Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson. A heartbroken Gibson posted a tribute to Avitto on his Instagram page early Monday morning.
Furthermore, the NYPD released a sketch of the suspect.
