Well it’s finally official: Roberto Orci has been hired by Paramount to direct Star Trek 3, according to Variety. The news comes just days after previous reports that Orci was the frontrunner for the job, but because he’s a rookie director, the studio was also likely looking at other candidates. Orci is replacing J.J. Abrams, who jumped ship to the Star Wars franchise after directing the last two Star Trek movies.

Orci may be a novice to the director’s chair, but he helped write the last two Trek movies, so he has an intimate knowledge of the world Abrams created. This will help bring consistency to the series after a change at the helm. Orci is also writing the story for Trek 3, along with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.

Are you happy with Paramount’s decision, or would you have liked the studio to go with a veteran director for the job? Let us know.
