It’s been about seven years since Matt Damon last played Jason Bourne in a movie, but during a recent interview with CNBC, the actor revealed that he isn’t completely opposed to returning as the iconic spy.
"It felt like such a good way to end it the last time, but having said that I love that character…and I'd love to see what happened to him, “ Damon said. “Because technically, the movie that came out in 2007 dovetailed with the one that came out in 2004, so technically the last time Jason Bourne was seen was 2004."
Damon also confirmed that he would only be interested in a return to Bourne if director Paul Greengrass joined him as well. Greengrass has found success outside of Bourne recently with Captain Phillips, so it seems unlikely that he would want to return to his old franchise.
Plus, Damon revealed there is another hurdle standing in the way: "We've just never been able to come up with a story." He continued by telling the interviewer, "So, if any of your viewers have a story, please call Universal and submit it."
While The Bourne Legacy fared decently without Damon, it’s obvious that the franchise won’t be able to continue for long just starring Jeremy Renner. If Damon and Greengrass can’t find the right story to return to, it’s hard to imagine the franchise reaching its previous heights ever again.
