Aaron Swartz, the co-founder of Reddit who hung himself in his apartment in January of last year, was a proud activist who fought for a free and open Internet. Swartz killed himself when he was given two counts of wire fraud and 11 violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which gave him a penalty of $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison. He received the sentence after he downloaded academic journals from MIT and released them to the public (in order to access them, MIT students had to pay.)
