Newly Discovered Emails Show Google Had Regular Contact With the NSA Since 2012

New ly released emails by Al-Jazeera show that Google had regular contact with the NSA.

Newly discovered emails show that Google had regular contact with the NSA, and were friendlier than they let on after the Snowden leaks.

The 2012 emails obtained by Al Jazeera show exchanges between Google chairman Eric Schmidt and NSA director Keith Alexander. What's said in the emails isn't anything crazy, mostly meeting planning, but they show that Google and the NSA had a routine correspondence and were comfortable talking with Microsoft, HP, AMD, and Apple, about participating in meetings with the agency.

“About six months ago, we began focusing on the security of mobility devices,” Alexander wrote in one of the emails. “A group (primarily Google, Apple and Microsoft) recently came to agreement on a set of core security principles. When we reach this point in our projects we schedule a classified briefing for the CEOs of key companies to provide them a brief on the specific threats we believe can be mitigated and to seek their commitment for their organization to move ahead … Google’s participation in refinement, engineering and deployment of the solutions will be essential.”
