Keeping Up with the de Blasios: What Happened to NYC's First Family this Month

Young Chiara wrote an essay this month about her struggle with addiction. Health and human services secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, honored Ms. de Blasio with an award for her courage and willingness to publicly discuss her personal struggle with depression and substance abuse. Also difficult: pulling off a nose ring. Not many people can get away with wearing a facial piercing and still look like a respectable member of the first family.

The New York Post and other tabloids accused the first lady of New York of being a bad mother after she was quoted in a New York magazine cover story saying she wasn't always there for her kids. She also said that she doesn't think gender equality in the work place is about "leaning in." Perhaps the most telling piece of information from the interview was the fact that Ms. McCray is a gardener.

The New York Times reported that members of the Republican party, such as Jeb Bush, have taken to using Bill de Blasio as their new national punching bag. Why? Because Republicans have nothing better to do than make money and talk shit about the people who think they have too much of it. Also, with the midterm elections quickly approaching, Republicans need to show their constituents that they still hate poor people and those who try to help them.

The Mayor of New York has been standing by his woman in the aftermath of the "I was a bad mom" tabloid scandal. Not only was the mayor outraged by the hurtful comments from the New York Post and Daily News, he has demanded an apology. (Let's face it, it's an apology he and his wife aren't likely to receive. Oh well. It's tough being the first family of New York.)
