Brooklyn Is a Popular Name Everywhere Except for Brooklyn

People love the name Brooklyn for girls. Just not in Brooklyn.

Slate got it right: viral maps—like statistics—are extremely misleading, but they're still amusing.

This latest map to be picked apart involves baby names, and revealed that the name "Brooklyn" is popular basically everywhere except for New York. Specifically, about five out of every 10,000 baby girls from Brooklyn were named Brooklyn. Conversely, in West Virginia, 131 out of every 10,000 baby girls had the name

So what's really in a name? According to this particular study, Brooklyn is the most popular "B" name for girls, except in the place where the name originated. Jay-Z once said he'd name his daughter after the borough that raised him, but even he changed his mind. 

The bigger picture is that you can use maps, like statistics, to say whatever you want.
