According to the NYPD, the man who has allegedly been attacking New York City subway riders with a hammer has a fitting last name: "Coward."
Anthony Coward, 28, is sought for three separate attacks, the first of which occurred in Queens on Mar. 5. A pregnant 26-year-old woman said a man snuck up behind her, hit her in the back of the head with a hammer, then ran off with her purse. She was taken to Jamaica Hospital for treatment.
The second attack took place on the morning of May 4, when a 23-year-old man was also hit in the back of the head with a hammer at the Rockaway Avenue station in Brooklyn. The assailant continued to beat the man with the hammer before escaping with his wallet. The victim was later transported to Brookdale Hospital.
The most recent attack took place on Wednesday, as 32-year-old Richianand Brijanand was hit in the back of the head with a hammer and robbed while purchasing a MetroCard at the same station.
Authorities describe Coward as 6'1" and 160 pounds. They're asking anyone with more information about him or his whereabouts to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS, text TIP577 to 274637 or visit their website.
