Just as people convince themselves they are going to take up guitar or painting, we also tell ourselves that this is the year we get serious about fitness. Too often, our first step is to dig into our bank account to make an impulse purchase of skis, tennis rackets, treadmills, or some other thing that will someday injure us when it fall on us in the garage in the middle of the night. With fitness, just as with hobbies, it is a good idea to invest incrementally until you need better equipment. That snowboard may look great, but does it mattter if it looks great gathering dust against the wall in your room.
