The decision to bring Batman in for the sequel to Man of Steel was a no-brainer for fans, but it wasn’t necessarily the plan that the team had from the beginning. It wasn’t until Man of Steel wrapped that everyone involved began to think that the Dark Knight might be the perfect ingredient to bring into Supes’ world for a sequel. In an interview with Forbes, director Zack Snyder elaborated on the process behind the decision:

None

You also have to remember that Batman means big dollars at the box office. While Man of Steel was a solid success with almost $700 million grossed worldwide, the inclusion of the Caped Crusader will only increase that for a sequel.

Unfortunately we don’t actually know what Batman will look like in the film, and Snyder couldn’t confirm when the studio will debut the new costume for the character. But he did have this to say about the process:

None

The fact that there is a picture out there of DC’s holy trinity in live action for the first time should get the salivary glands of any comic fan working overtime. Remember, with filming on the movie beginning to ramp up, expect the studio to release something soon in order to beat the paparazzi to the punch.

The untitled Batman/Superman movie will hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
