Steven Spielberg has been pretty quiet since a little movie called Lincoln in 2012, but he's on track to direct an adaptation of a beloved Roald Dahl novel. The BFG (that's big friendly giant) has been in production since at least 2011, when DreamWorks acquired the rights.

E.T. scribe Melissa Matheson wrote the script, which centers on a little orphan girl who befriends the titular BFG. There's no word on who will star in the live-action movie, but it's slated to begin filming in 2015 and will get a 2016 release.

Spielberg will get something out before, then, though, and rumor has it it's a Cold War thriller starring Tom Hanks.
