In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said today that casting for the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII is “almost complete,” and that an announcement about the film's stars would be coming “very shortly.”
Rumors regarding the cast have run rampant, with very few certainties beyond the original trio of Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Carrie Fischer (Princess Leia), and Harrison Ford (Han Solo) all returning to reprise their roles. Names like Adam Driver (Girls), Jesse Plemmons (Breaking Bad, Friday Night Lights), and even Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o(12 Years a Slave) have all rumored to be involved in the production, but nobody has been confirmed as of yet.
The only officially confirmed character at this stage, unsurprisingly, is everybody’s favorite quirky droid: R2-D2. Undoubtedly, he will be getting up to some sort of mischief no matter who solemn the rest of the onscreen proceedings get.
As part of his comments, Horn also said that the some filming has already commenced on the film, although it has thus far just been scene shots in Abu Dhabi and nothing of actual substance. Principle photography, he said, should begin soon now that the second unit filming is largely done.
Star Wars: Episode VII is currently scheduled to open on December 18, 2015.
