On the low, NYC Condoms are a hit in the Dominican Republic

According to the New York Daily News, the infamous New York City-branded condoms were being peddled for 50 cents in the town of Las Galeras. What's insulting—other than the fact that other condom brands like Durex are being sold for twice that—is that they're free in the city's five boroughs.

The Daily News adds that the New York City Department of Health gives away about 38 million of the condoms annually to curb the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. But an employee at Las Galeras Pharmacy told the Daily News that they purchase them from an unknown distributor in the DR.

"We buy them from a provider here in the Republic," Francisco Pallano explained. "They distribute them to any pharmacy that wants them."

The Health Department said businesses have been caught shipping the condoms out of the U.S. in the past, which has resulted in at least five being expelled from the program since its 2007 launch. Apparently, the NYC Condom is in such great demand in the Dominican Republic that it appeared in a 2012 market report from Euromonitor International.

Though it's kind of fucked up that people are paying for something available for free in bulk in the U.S., at least people are using them.
