SPOILERS AHEAD. BUT IF YOU SERIOUSLY HAVEN’T SEEN THE SOPRANOS FINALE YET…COME ON.

EW has been reexamining finales of classic TV shows lately, and in an interview with Michael Imperioli has turned their eye towards the highly-controversial 2007 finale of The Sopranos. The former Christopher Moltisanti actually took a very level-headed approach to the whole thing, looking at the bigger picture implications of the infamous “blackout” rather than the episode's lack of clear conclusion.

While he did say he believed that he thought the blackout was Tony being killed, Imperioli instead looked at the meaning of that entire scene:

“I think the message, whatever message David was getting at, and this is my interpretation, you know because everything is kind of falling apart by then for the Soprano family. You know, Christopher is dead and [Steve] Schirripa’s character is dead and Steve Van Zandt is in a coma — it’s kind of like the ruins of the Soprano family. When you’re going through these difficult times of chaos and trauma, the most important thing is to keep those who are closest to you together. He was with his immediate family, the ones he loved the most; I think that’s maybe the message if there is one.”

Interesting comments, certainly, from someone who knows full well about the problems of the Soprano family. Poor Christopher went through a lot over the course of the show, ranging from heroin addiction to discovering his fiancée was an FBI informant and ordering her murder as a result.

While we may never know what really happened to Tony Soprano (David Chase went on record saying “it’s all there,” whatever that means), it’s always interesting to hear new perspectives from those most intimately involved. If you want more Imperioli, he’ll be co-starring in The M Word, an independent film which will be released on April 30.
