As expected, the Brooklyn teenager who started the fire that ultimately killed one NYPD officer and another injured another has been charged with murder.
Marcell Dockery, 16, was indicted on second-degree murder charges yesterday, nearly a week after setting a mattress on fire on the 13th floor of the Coney Island apartment building where he lived with his mother. After receiving a 911 call about the fire, Officers Dennis Guerra and Rosa Rodriguez responded, but passed out after exiting an elevator due to smoke.
Guerra died from his injuries on Wednesday morning, while Rodriguez is recovering in the burn unit at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell.
Dockery had originally been charged with arson, assault and reckless endangerment, but many suspected the charges would be upgraded after Guerra passed away.
In a statement addressing the indictment, Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson promised to "bring [Dockery] to justice for these terrible and horrific crimes."
