Four people were killed when a car fell into the Steinway Creek in Queens last night, authorities say.
A 911 call regarding a car in the water was received around 10:37 p.m. last night. Authorities arrived to the scene in Astoria to find the driver, a 20-year-old man, who had managed to escape the vehicle and call 911. The car reportedly crashed through a three-foot-high chain-link fence before falling into the water.
Emergency responders were forced to break windows to remove the first body. Three victims—two women; one man—were taken to Elmhurst General Hospital and pronounced dead. The other male passenger was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital.
According to the New York Daily News, the group was traveling to a restaurant to celebrate one of the victims' 19th birthday. No one in the car was over the age of 21.
The driver took a Breathalyer test and blew a 0.00, but Gothamist adds that the incident is still under investigation.
