No comic book character is immune from the specter of death, and now it looks like the Grim Reaper is coming to Riverdale. It was revealed today that America’s most iconic comic book teenager, Archie Andrews, will receive a heroic death in the final two issues of Life with Archie this July.

According to USA Today, Archie will die saving someone close to him in Life with Archie #36, and the following issue will focus on his supporting cast like Jughead, Betty, and Veronica dealing with his death. That will mark the end of the series, which was revived in 2010.

Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater had this to say about Archie’s demise: “It just made sense to end Life with Archie this way — showing our hero at his best and then celebrating his life.” He continued, "He's an icon. He's the best kind of person, and sometimes we need to be reminded of how important he is."

Fortunately for fans, Life with Archie is a book that has always chronicled the potential future of Archie, so the character will continue to live on in the various other Archie books that the company puts out.
