The teenage boy accused of fatally stabbing a fellow student at a Connecticut high school for refusing to be his prom date this week will spend time in a psychiatric ward and is likely to be tried as an adult, officials say.

On Friday morning, 16-year-old Chris Plaskon allegedly stabbed Maren Sanchez, also 16, at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Conn. Plaskon was detained until police arrived and though emergency responders tried to revive Sanchez, she was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital.

Classes were dismissed for the day and the school's prom, scheduled were that night, was postponed indefinitely.

Fellow students expressed shock that Plaskon, known as the class clown, was capable of this. "Chris was somebody I would never imagine doing this at all. I always thought higher of him," Emma Grace told the New York Daily News. "Chris was always someone that was very into sports, nice, friendly, had a lot of friends."

State's attorney Kevin Kevin Lawlor said that Plaskon could face adult charges, but will have to appear in court first. Plaskon is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation, a process that will likely take at least two weeks.
