At the close of March, police in Chicago celebrated the city's lowest first-quarter homicide total in 56 years

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that over the year's first three months, there were six fewer murders than there were at the same time last year and 55 fewer than the same period in 2012. Furthermore, there have been 90 fewer shootings and 119 fewer shooting victims than there were in 2013, as well as 222 fewer shootings and 292 fewer victims than 2012.

According to the Sun-Times, police say overall crime has declined by 25 percent since 2013, while upwards of 1,300 illegal guns have been seized since the beginning of the year.

This marks part of a larger trend, as crime has been dropping in Chicago since last year, when the city recorded its fewest homicides since 1965.
