James Mangold’s The Wolverine was far better than it had any right to be. By toning down the CGI and putting the focus back on Hugh Jackman’s performance as Wolverine, the film played out more like a gritty noir tale, rather than an overblown superhero blockbuster. It gave fans hope for the future of the X-Men franchise; plus, the movie made more than $400 million worldwide, which is more than enough for Fox to want a sequel.

However, with Jackman already appearing as Wolverine in this year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, and with X-Men: Apocalypse coming out in 2016, it wasn’t clear when Mangold would get his chance at a sequel. But this tweet he sent to a fan gives us a better idea of what is going on at Fox:

Nothing is set in stone yet, but it’s obvious that Mangold is moving forward with a new Wolverine project. It also remains to be seen whether or not the character will even appear in Apocalypse. If not, the two can film close enough together that a Wolverine sequel can be in theaters by 2017.

That being said, Hugh Jackman has been vocal about eventually giving the character up, which could derail the whole film. Then again, dump trucks full of money do wonders for conflicted actors.
