A woman was arrested after striking a 5-year-old boy in Brooklyn last night, killing him.

The New York Daily News reports that the boy, Rashard Charles, was returning to his Crown Heights apartment with his mother around 8:30 p.m. when he ran out into the street. That's when 23-year-old Elizabeth Maynard backed her Honda Odyssey into him.

Witnesses told the Daily News that Maynard pulled off as the boy's mother screamed for her to stop. Thomas Barry said that she came back, visibly shaken and unaware that she had hit anyone. "She [the driver] came back screaming. She said she didn’t know she hit anybody," he told the Daily News.

Charles was pronounced dead after being transported to Kings County Hospital. Maynard was charged with reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
