A man was shot and killed by police after stabbing another on the University of Florida's campus today.

According to the Huffington Post, an officer with the Gainesville Police Department shot Michael Cravey, 28, after he stabbed a man with a hatchet on the Gainesville, Fla. school's campus this morning. Police were summoned after the victim, a University of Florida staff member, and his wife encountered Cravey near Leigh Hall this morning. The woman was uninjured, and Cravey fled in a jeep.

The man's wife called 911, and officers pursued Cravey in a vehicle, but were unable to apprehend him. Driving erratically, Cravey eventually crashed his car by a Best Buy parking lot. An officer identified himself and ordered Cravey to drop the hatchet, but Cravey charged at him with the weapon, forcing him to open fire.

Authorities say Cravey and the victim did not know each other.
