Square's classic 16-bit JRPG Chrono Trigger will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, but don't expect a new adventure set in that universe to happen anytime soon. In an interview with Square Portal, Lightning Returns producer answered a wide swath of questions about Final Fantasy and other Square properties, including Chrono Trigger.

When asked whether or not Square might revisit the Chrono universe at some point – particularly with the 20th anniversary of the original just around the corner – the director of the SNES classic said it was unlikely. it turns out it's a rights issue, essentially – current developers at Square Enix would have to contact both producer and character designer Akira Toriyama as well as former Square head and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Kitase said in the translated interview.

In short, another Chrono adventure probably won't happen.

Kitase also gained some recent press attention, after saying the undertaking for a Final Fantasy VII remake using current tech would be such a huge undertaking it would likely take a decade to complete.

Sorry Square fans, looks like you're just going have to move on. Or hold out hope for a Final Fantasy XII HD remaster.
