A historic upstate New York hotel has been closed for a week following reports of a stomach virus that's sickened several employees and guests.
Reports of the virus— which has symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea—first arose last Friday at the Mohonk Mountain House. The outbreak has reportedly sickened hundreds of people. After attempting to clean the hotel on their own, management made the decision this past Friday to close it for a week and bring a private company in for an extremely thorough sanitizing.
In a statement, hotel president Bert Smiley said that the hotel was working with health officials to resolve the matter as quickly and efficiently as possible. "Working with the Ulster County and New York State Departments of Health, we have already implemented many recommended measures to address this issue and have determined that further action needs to be taken," he said.
The Daily Intelligencer reports that hotel spokeswoman Nina Smiley told CBS New York that the virus outbreak "could have started anywhere." The hotel will re-open for check-in on Feb. 14.
