For all of the praise that HBO’s brilliant new series, True Detective, has been getting since its debut, one of the biggest, and most valid, criticisms is the show’s unenlightened portrayal of female characters. All of the women on the series seem to be moody wives, loose mistresses, bunny ranch hookers, or corpses. While it’s true that this is a staple of many noir stories, it can become trite at times.

Thankfully, the show’s writer and creator, Nic Pizzolatto, gave fans a sliver of hope that the next season of True Detective will feature some fully-formed female characters in this brief Twitterexchange with a fan:

@friggenawesome One of the detriments of only having two POV characters, both men (a structural necessity). Next season...

Sure, all it says is “Next season…” but it’s obvious that he has something in mind. Whether it all comes together or not is a completely different story.
