The folks over at Marvel probably don’t see many vacation days. Even though Captain America: The Winter Soldier is coming out in a little over a month and Guardians of the Galaxy is ramping up the marking campaign for its summer release, the studio is still working tirelessly on its future. In a recent exclusive over at The Hollywood Reporter, the site broke the news that Marvel is already eyeing four directing candidates for its upcoming Doctor Strange movie.

These names include: Mark Andrews (Brave), Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday), and Jonathan Levine (50/50). What’s immediately obvious is that Marvel isn’t going for talent with a household name or blockbuster experience. While many fans throw out obvious names like Guillermo del Toro and Tim Burton for Strange, the House of Ideas seems like it wants to go with the sleeper candidate. That's a strategy that has worked pretty well so far for the studio.

As interesting as some of those names are, the most intriguing rumor about the movie is coming from Bleeding Cool, which is claiming that Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, The Hunt) is on the studio’s radar to play a role in Doctor Strange, presumably as Strange himself. Mikkelsen almost worked with Marvel on Thor: The Dark World, but scheduling issues prevented it. He also worked with Arcel previously on A Royal Affair, so there might be something to these reports.

Obviously this is very early on in the process, but Mikkelsen is an inspired choice that would give Strange the type of credibility that most superhero movies simply don’t have. We’ll have more information as rumors and official announcements are released.
